Save energy in the kitchen

If you’ve got a pan on the stove to boil water, be sure to put a lid on it. Not only will it come to the boil faster, but you’ll make savings on the energy it uses. If you’ve got boiled eggs on the go, turn the heat off early, and they will continue to cook.

Your fridge freezer will use far more energy if it’s placed near to sunlight or a heat source (such as a radiator or a cooker). Quite often, you can even adjust the setting on the fridge as it doesn’t need to be that cold. This simple act can save on your electricity bill over the year.

If you haven’t defrosted your freezer for a while, then it most likely needs doing. Ice buildup can force your freezer to work harder to stay cold. Even if your freezer is an automatic defroster, keep an eye on how much ice it has.

Using a tumble drier is a costly way to dry clothes. It’s better to use an outdoor line or even indoor clothes airer.

Save energy in other areas

Did you know that you only have to turn down your thermostat by one degree to save up to £90 a year on energy costs? These days, a lot of people grab a blanket to keep the chill off. #

Showers are far more efficient in terms of saving energy. Even by replacing just one bath a week for a family of four, it’s possible to save £20 a year on gas bills.

Close your curtains at night time to keep the heat in and the cold out.

If the wiring of your home is more than 20 years old, there’s a good chance that it’s out of date. Our lifestyles have changed a lot during that time, most of have an internet router running constantly which can put the circuit under strain.

Switch to the new style energy-efficient light bulbs, and you can save as much as £50 over the life of the bulb.

By ensuring that your fridge is full, it will use less energy. Only run your dishwasher if it’s full. Running a half load means using just as much water and electricity but for only half the dishes. The same theory is the case with washing machines. Put a full load in to make the best use of the water and the power.
